Hoveringham
Hoveringham village is located a few miles to the North West of Nottingham city centre.
A short circular walk (about one and a half hours) between
Hoveringham village and the River Trent takes you through grazed fields, along
the river bank, through arable farmland and through the village of Hoveringham
itself. Typical farmland birds can be seen as well as the usual grebes
(Little and Great Crested are common), ducks, cormorant, mute swan, kingfisher
along the river. Occasionally a wader can be seen on the far bank when the
water is low. The sand pits provide an open stretch of water, similar to
many of the pits in the area, that hosts the usual duck and gull species and, on
one occasion, a Black-throated Diver.
Hoveringham can be reached from the A612 out of
Nottingham. Turn right at the Lowdham roundabout, then left immediaely
after crossing the railway line, then first right. Follow this road
through Caythorpe. After two miles, the road follows the river and then
takes a sharp left away from the river. Park just before this sharp left
(there is a parking area about 200 meters before the bend). Walk Westwards
along the river bank towards the Sand Pits, scanning the ground and trees to the
left as well as the river to the right. Once you have viewed the Sand
Pits, take the footpath along the South Eastern edge of the nearest pit and
continue along the marked footpath that heads back towards Hoveringham
village. You will eventually emerge via a narrow path into the centre of
the village. Make your way back along the roads to your car, scanning the
bushes and fields on the way.
